Hatch The Chicken for Connecticut Afterschool Programs

A five-week live hatching program for Connecticut afterschool and out-of-school-time programs — with four-week options to fit your calendar. We deliver a tabletop incubator about the size of a volleyball that arrives already programmed, seven hatching eggs, a candling light and a brooder kit, with printed setup instructions and a video sent ahead — then come back at the end and collect every bit of it, chicks included.

Why it works in an afterschool room

• Twenty-five program days with a spine in them. A counter ticking down from 21, then two weeks of chicks. Something is different in that room every single afternoon, and none of it needs a lesson plan written the night before.
• The daily jobs belong to the children. Reading the counter, filling in the log, holding the candling light, checking the water. A brand-new group leader can run the routine competently on her first day — and it will still be running if she leaves halfway through.
• Every hatch lands on a program day — never a weekend. You will know your exact hatch date before you commit.
• Weeks 1–3, the eggs. The incubator turns them itself and holds its own temperature. No humidity to manage. Warm water three times a week, and the lid stays shut after lockdown. Weeks 4–5, the chicks: fresh food and clean water morning and afternoon, a look to check everyone is bright, and one bedding change. Small, but real — we leave written instructions and a phone number.
• We take everything home, chicks included. Raising and rehoming them is our responsibility, not yours. No program in Connecticut is left working out what to do with seven chickens in June.
• Honest numbers. Expect three to five chicks from seven eggs. Not every egg becomes a chick, and we will help you find the words for that before it happens.

Every room, the same morning

We deliver up to 28 incubators on a single date. One order, one delivery, one collection — and we coordinate it rather than you. A better rate applies when several rooms share one delivery address, and a district can order across all its schools at once. If you run four sites and have been choosing one, you have not had to.

Quality standards, and the paperwork

The free Hatch Packet below includes a CT-QSAT crosswalk — mapped against the Connecticut Network for Children and Youth's own eight quality domains, with indicator wording quoted so you can check it. It claims four domains, calls three partial, and says plainly which one this program does not touch.

It also carries a ready-written enrichment goal you can edit and paste into your program plan, together with the draw-and-label instrument and a 0–5 scoring rubric, so the goal is measurable the day you write it. Plus NGSS 1-LS3-1, 3-LS1-1 and 3-LS3-1, and an honest note about the grades that have no life-cycle standard at all.

A room with every grade in it at once

A classroom teacher aligns to one grade. You have grades 1 through 5 in the room together, so the activity plan in the packet runs by week with three age lanes — youngest, middle, oldest — rather than grade by grade. The strongest move is putting your oldest children in charge of the candling station for the younger ones. It is a real job, and it is the honest answer for a ten-year-old with no standard of their own.

Safety, and what your nurse and facilities office will ask

• Nobody touches the chicks. Children observe through the incubator's clear dome and at the fully enclosed brooder. A written no-touch and handwashing protocol is in the packet, ready to forward to your school nurse.
• The heat source is a 13-watt radiant plate, not a heat lamp — no bulb, no glass, maximum surface temperature 125°F. The whole setup draws about 33 watts at peak, roughly two per cent of the 1,500-watt space heater every district bans. Everything plugs directly into a wall outlet — no extension cord, no power strip.
• 900+ programs since 2022. Zero reported illnesses. No fire and no electrical incident.
• The equipment and fire-safety specification, with model numbers and electrical listings, is in the packet for your facilities office. A family notification letter in English and Spanish is there too.

What it costs, and how the paperwork goes

Starts at $225 per incubator, delivered and collected. Delivery is included within 50 miles of Northford — most of Connecticut. Beyond that a per-mile charge applies once, on the first delivery, not per room. There is no per-child fee, so the cost does not move with your enrollment.

It is a supplies-and-materials purchase rather than a contract for services. Tell us your site and town, how many rooms, and the weeks that work, and we will send a dated quote with a purchase order number field, our W-9 and our certificate of insurance — usually the same day, so your business office is never what holds it up. No deposit, and your date is held.

Picking a date

Connecticut towns don't share a calendar. February break, April break and even which holidays a district actually closes for all vary town to town. So instead of guessing, we publish dates across the whole spring and help you find the one that clears your break weeks — and if your program crosses a three-day weekend, we tell you before you book, not after.
